Fourth of July Fire Safety Tips: Fireworks and BBQ Safety

July 1, 2024

As we gear up to celebrate the Fourth of July, it's essential to prioritize fire safety while enjoying fireworks, BBQs, and other festive activities. In Florida, where hurricane season coincides with our Independence Day celebrations, having proper fire safety measures in place is more crucial than ever. Here are some important tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday.

Fireworks Safety Tips

  1. Purchase Legal Fireworks: Ensure you buy fireworks from reputable sources and that they are legal in your area.
  2. Follow Instructions: Read and follow all safety instructions on fireworks packaging.
  3. Keep Water Nearby: Always have a bucket of water or a hose ready to extinguish any accidental fires.
  4. Light One at a Time: Light fireworks one at a time and move back quickly.
  5. Safe Distance: Maintain a safe distance from buildings, vehicles, and spectators.
  6. Never Relight Duds: If a firework doesn’t go off, wait 20 minutes before soaking it in water and disposing of it.

BBQ Safety Tips

  1. Grill Placement: Place grills well away from your home, deck railings, and overhanging branches.
  2. Supervise the Grill: Never leave your grill unattended while it’s in use.
  3. Clean Your Grill: Regularly clean your grill to remove grease buildup that can cause flare-ups.
  4. Check for Leaks: For gas grills, check the gas tank hose for leaks before using it each year.
  5. Use the Right Tools: Use long-handled utensils to keep a safe distance from the flames.
  6. Keep Children and Pets Away: Create a “kid-free zone” of at least three feet around the grill.

Having a fire extinguisher on hand is essential for quickly addressing small fires before they become large disasters. As the weather cools down and we gather with friends and family to celebrate Thanksgiving, now’s the perfect time to make sure safety stays at the top of your list. Between cooking, candles, and seasonal bonfires, November brings a higher risk of fire incidents — especially here in Florida as we move into the dry season. Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported — but these incidents are a strong reminder that fire prevention matters year-round. Even though we’ve had a few cooler nights this past weekend, don’t let your guard down—hurricane season is far from over. Last October, Florida was hit with not one, but two hurricanes, proving that storms can strike late in the year. Power outages, flooding, and fire risks don’t follow a schedule, which is why emergency lighting and fire preparedness should always be top of mind.

With hurricane season here, fire safety often gets overlooked — but it’s more important than ever. Storm damage, power surges, and flooding can all create unexpected fire hazards. Just in the last few weeks, our community has seen: A 3-alarm scrapyard blaze in Tampa that took firefighters all night to contain. A semi-truck fire on I-4 after a driver suffered a medical emergency. A mobile home fire in Tampa that tragically left one person dead. Multiple business fires in St. Pete Beach and Clearwater , leaving owners struggling to recover. These events are sobering reminders that fires can happen anytime, anywhere. The best defense is being prepared.
