Boating Fire Safety at Sea: Recreational and Commercial Vessel Safety & Fines

Dan Freitag • Jun 06, 2023

As the temperature climbs and the call of the open waters becomes irresistible, it is essential to remember the importance of fire safety on your vessel, whether it's a personal boat, a recreational craft, or a commercial vessel. A to Z Fire is dedicated to helping you navigate the sea of regulations to ensure that you are in full compliance and well-prepared for any emergency.

Fire Safety: A Legal Responsibility

According to the National Weather Service and the U.S. Coast Guard, all boats, where a fire hazard could be expected from the engines or fuel system, are required to have on board U.S. Coast Guard approved, marine-type fire extinguishers. The size of the boat determines the quantity and type of fire extinguishers required.

Boat Size Fire Extinguisher Requirement
Less than 26 feet At least one B-I, Coast Guard-approved fire extinguisher
26–40 feet Two B-I or one B-II Coast Guard-approved fire extinguisher(s)
40 - 65 feet Three B-I or one B-II and one B-I Coast Guard-approved extinguishers

Fire extinguishers are classified by a letter and a number symbol. The letter indicates the type of fire the unit is designed to extinguish and the number indicates the size of the extinguisher. A type B extinguisher, for example, is intended to extinguish burning liquids such as gasoline, oil or grease, all common on a boat.

In the event of a fire, quick accessibility to these life-saving devices is crucial. Thus, a boater should never have to travel more than half the length of their boat to get to a fire extinguisher. Furthermore, these fire extinguishers should be inspected annually by the boater to ensure they are properly charged, stored and undamaged.

The Cost of Non-Compliance

Navigating the waters of recreational and commercial boating comes with a responsibility to adhere to safety regulations. Non-compliance doesn't just compromise safety, it also incurs penalties that can be steep. The fines imposed by various authorities - the United States Coast Guard (USCG), the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FL FWC), the Sheriff, and the Coast Guard Auxiliary - differ based on the nature of the violation. Let's explore some of the potential costs associated with common equipment violations:

Violation USCG FL FWC Sheriff Auxiliary
Life Jacket $50.00 $35.00 $35.00+ $0.00
Fire Extinguisher $50.00 $35.00 $35.00+ $0.00
VDS / Flares $50.00 $35.00 $35.00+ $0.00
Decal Numbering $50.00 $35.00 $35.00+ $0.00
Horn / Whistle $125.00 $35.00 $35.00+ $0.00
Running Lights $100.00 $35.00 $35.00+ $0.00

The good news is that some insurance companies offer discounts for boats that pass a Vessel Safety Check every year. These checks are valid through December 31st of the year they are inspected and can be voided if the operator/owner fails to maintain the vessel's equipment or the vessel itself to the required standard.

Items checked during a safety inspection include life jackets, registration and numbering, navigation lights, ventilation, fire extinguishers, distress signals (flares, horn, etc.), and battery cover and connections. Failure to comply with these standards can result in fines if your vessel is inspected by the Coast Guard or other maritime law enforcement.

Warehouses and industrial facilities play a critical role in our economy, but they also pose significant fire safety risks. Proper fire safety measures are essential to protect employees, inventory, and the structure itself from fire damage. Here are some important considerations to keep in mind for maintaining fire safety in warehouses and industrial facilities: 1. Comprehensive Fire Risk Assessment Conduct a thorough risk assessment to identify potential fire hazards such as flammable materials, electrical issues, and unsafe storage practices. Regularly review and update the risk assessment as new materials, equipment, or processes are introduced. 2. Proper Storage Practices Follow recommended guidelines for the storage of flammable and combustible materials. Maintain adequate spacing between stored items to prevent fire from spreading quickly. Store hazardous materials separately and according to safety regulations. 3. Fire Detection and Alarm Systems Install reliable fire detection and alarm systems throughout the facility. Regularly test and maintain these systems to ensure they are functioning correctly. 4. Fire Suppression Systems Equip the facility with appropriate fire suppression systems such as sprinklers, fire extinguishers, and fire hoses. Provide training to employees on how to use fire extinguishers and other suppression equipment. 5. Emergency Exits and Evacuation Plans Ensure that emergency exits are clearly marked and unobstructed. Develop and regularly practice evacuation plans with employees to ensure everyone knows how to exit the facility safely in the event of a fire. 6. Electrical Safety Regularly inspect and maintain electrical systems to prevent potential fire hazards such as overloaded circuits or faulty wiring. Encourage employees to report any electrical issues immediately. 7. Employee Training and Awareness Provide fire safety training to all employees, including how to respond to fire alarms and use fire safety equipment. Promote a culture of fire safety by encouraging employees to be vigilant and proactive about reporting hazards. 8. Regular Fire Safety Inspections Schedule regular inspections by fire safety professionals to ensure that the facility is up to code and that all fire safety measures are in place and working properly.

Why Maintaining Fire Alarms is Crucial Fire alarms are your first line of defense in the event of a fire emergency. They alert occupants, allowing for swift evacuation and enabling firefighters to respond promptly. However, a faulty fire alarm system can pose significant risks: Code Violations : Non-functioning or improperly maintained fire alarm systems can result in code violations, leading to fines and penalties. Increased Fire Risk : A malfunctioning fire alarm may fail to detect a fire, delaying response times and exacerbating the situation. Expensive Firewatch : In some cases, a faulty fire alarm system may necessitate the implementation of a firewatch, a costly measure to ensure safety in the absence of a functioning alarm system.

Hello A to Z Fire community! We hope this message finds you well as we kick off the month with a crucial reminder about fire safety. As avid supporters of Fire Is Everyone’s Fight, we're committed to spreading awareness and ensuring the safety of our community. This February, the focus is on Closed Door Messaging, and we're here to shed light on why closing your door at night can be a life-saving habit. 1. Escaping a Fire: When faced with a fire emergency, every second counts. One essential piece of advice is to close the door behind you as you make your way to safety. This simple act can help contain the fire, prevent the spread of smoke, and buy you precious time. 2. Unable to Escape: In the unfortunate event that escape is not an option, getting behind a closed door can provide a crucial barrier between you and the fire. Once there, immediately call 9-1-1 for assistance. Closed doors can be an effective shield, protecting you from the immediate dangers and allowing rescue teams more time to reach you. 3. Close Before You Doze: An impactful campaign known as #CloseBeforeYouDoze emphasizes the importance of closing your bedroom door before going to sleep. This small habit can make a significant difference, as closed doors act as a barrier, limiting the spread of flames and smoke. It's a simple yet powerful step toward enhancing your safety and that of your loved ones.
